5 Questions to Ask Before Buying a Contour Leg Pillow

If you have been waking up with a sore back or stiff knees, it may be time to invest in a pillow that can help ease your symptoms. Contour leg pillows support the lower back and make it easier to maintain an ergonomically correct position throughout the night. Not all pillows are created equal, however. There are several things you need to know before you spend money on a contour pillow to cushion your knees and support your back.

#1: Do you really need a leg pillow?

Low back pain often occurs in the morning because of how we sleep at night. Curling into the fetal position or lying on the back puts pressure on the muscles and makes them ache. Some pain is caused by how the legs are positioned during the night, but some aches are caused by other factors. Figure out if you need a leg pillow or another type of contour pillow. Document your aches and pains in a notebook for several days. Write down anything that might have made the pain worse, such as running a long distance or playing a rough game of basketball.

If you share your home with a spouse or roommate, ask that person to let you know if you are sleeping in an unusual position at night. If it appears that your pain is due to the way you position your legs at night, then a contour leg pillow may alleviate the problem. If you think the pain is originating elsewhere in your body, a wedge pillow or other type of contour pillow may be a better choice.

#2: What kind of material do you want?

These pillows come in a variety of materials, but the contour memory foam leg pillow is the most popular version. Regular foam pillows disintegrate quickly, plus they do not conform to the body. Memory foam molds to the body and “remembers” its original shape. Once you set the pillow aside, it will regain its original shape fairly quickly. You also need to decide if you want low-density memory foam or high-density memory foam. Low-density foams are sensitive to pressure, while high-density foams are sensitive to heat. Contour pillows made with memory foam are heavier than most pillows, but they are also more comfortable and supportive.

#3: How much are you willing to spend?

Although a contour knee pillow is a good investment, most buyers do have a specific budget for this type of purchase. Contour pillows cost anywhere from $10 to more than $100, so it is important to determine how much you are willing to spend. Read contour leg pillow reviews to see which models provide the greatest satisfaction. The most expensive pillow will not necessarily have the best reviews, so this is a great way to get a supportive pillow without spending a lot of money.

#4: Is there any guarantee?

If possible, buy a contour leg pillow that has some sort of guarantee. If the pillow does not meet your expectations, or if it does not hold up to regular use, you will want to get your money back and try another model. Once you buy the pillow, use it consistently so that you can determine if it alleviates your pain and helps you maintain a comfortable sleeping position.

#5: How do I care for the contour leg pillow?

Before buying a contour pillow, look at the cleaning instructions on each one you are considering. If a pillow requires special care, you may want to cross it off your list. Many memory foam contour pillows come with a washable cover, eliminating the need to steam clean or dry clean your pillow.
